FOOD HYGIENE & SAFETY TRAINING - Departmental Stores

A need for further food hygiene and safety training was identified by two Departmental Stores which have an 'in-house' coffee shop. Some of the food handlers had received training to 'Foundation' level but due to staff turnover this number of trained personnel had decreased.

Management noted that the last programmed food safety inspection by the Environmental Health Officer (EHO) had identified that the numbers of trained personnel had declined and that due to this fact the coffee shop could only be awarded a 'Silver ' classification by the Council's inspector.

TIPS were contacted to carry out the necessary training, which was held over a three-day period to allow the coffee shop to continue in operation. Following the training all the food handlers passed the test and 8 were awarded 'credit passes' by the Royal Institute of Public Health.

The store management are now confident of being given a ‘Gold award’ by the EHO after the next programmed food safety inspection with the potential for increasing the spend per customer, and customer numbers, in the near future. The other bonus is that with a reduced ‘risk category score’ the EHO’s visits become less frequent.
